Good Enough Is Not Enough

Now, I think we all need to calm down here and think about what’s happening.

In 2020, the Browns made the playoffs for the first time since 2002, and won a playoff game for the first time since 1994.

In the years following these two things, mediocrity would have been a compliment for the Browns. They have been, at best, a bottom 3 franchise in the NFL.

But after winning a playoff game in 2020, the Browns missed the playoffs in 2021, for reasons we will get into later.

Now it’s the start of the 2022 league year, and Kevin Stefanski and Andrew Berry are doing everything they can to upgrade the quarterback position, and people are pissed off.

Let me say that again.

The Browns’ front office is trying to make the team better by upgrading the quarterback position and people are pissed off.

Let’s go back to the 2021 team. Last year, the Browns would have made the playoffs with league average quarterback play. And I don’t believe you can argue otherwise.

Just keeping it simple, if the Browns win the game against the Ravens where Lamar Jackson threw 4 interceptions, and the game in Green Bay when Baker threw 4 interceptions but had a chance at the end, they would have been 10-7, and locked up the the last spot in the AFC. In this scenario, Cincinnati still rests their starters in week 18 because they would have the division won.

That happens with league average quarterback play. Instead, the browns got subpar performance after subpar performance and still managed to win 8 games.

YES I KNOW HE WAS HURT. I know that he was basically playing with one arm. I understand that. But if he was injured enough for it to affect his play, then why did *he* decide to play?

The emphasis on *him* because he kept telling us every week that the decision to play through the shoulder injury was his. He decided to play because he wanted to earn a contract extension, and to prove how tough he is.

He proved he was tough, but damn sure didn’t earn an extension.

Let me ask another question. When everyone says that he only had one bad year because he was hurt, how come the Browns didn’t give him a contract after the 2020 season when he was healthy, and actually won the playoff game? If he was the lord and savior of the city, why didn’t he get rewarded?

This front office has never been sold on him. They did not draft him, they inherited him.

When he was healthy, they knew he wasn’t the franchise quarterback because of his decision making, inconsistent play, and attitude. In the 2020 season, he played well down the stretch because the schedule was weak. And in the playoff game they won, the Steelers had 5 turnovers. The game was 28-0 after the first quarter.

No team can over come that kind of deficit unless they have Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes at quarterback.

The next week, they couldn’t beat the Chiefs who had to play a whole half of football with Chad Henne as their quarterback.

I understand that Baker Mayfield is the best quarterback the browns have had in decades, but the bar is in hell. We don’t have to build Baker a statue just for being a C+ when everyone else has been an F. I am begging Browns fans to for once in their lifetime have standards. This team can win a Superbowl with better quarterback play. The Browns tried to get that great quarterback and failed.

If you would’ve not been a fan of the Browns employing Deshaun Watson that’s fine, but just so you know, they do actually currently employ Jim Brown.

I am happy that they tried to upgrade from Baker. The Browns of the last 20 years would have happily signed him to an extension, and been tied to mediocrity for several years. The fact that this front office has tried to improve after winning a playoff game is not a bad sign, it’s a great sign.

They are not satisfied with just making the playoffs, they want to win the whole thing. And that’s what I want people to see and understand.
