The latest NFL Draft rumor to start circulating is that the Cleveland Browns will take a quarterback with both the 1st and 4th overall picks.
First of all, I know that all rumors during draft season are to be taken with a grain of salt. But for me, the worse the rumor is, the more I tend to believe it is actually what the Browns are thinking.
In 2012, when the Washington Redskins took Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins in the same draft, it made it difficult for them to co-exist. And they were taken three rounds apart. If let’s say, Sam Darnold and Josh Allen were taken three picks apart? All hell would break loose.
Both quarterbacks would realize that the team likes both, but doesn’t quite have confidence in either one of them.
If one of them were to make a start in their rookie season and do poorly, fans in Cleveland would do nothing but start to wonder aloud when the other rookie would come in, that he would be a better player. This is not opinion, I know this to be fact from being born and raised in Cleveland, OH.
Both quarterbacks would get less reps and less one-on-one coaching time, and could potentially develop slower, instead of faster than they were supposed to.
This is all before even mentioning that Tyrod Taylor has already been announced as the starting quarterback for the 2018 season. Going by the conventional standards of the past few years of the NFL, one of these QB’s would be inactive because no team uses an active roster spot on gameday for a third quarterback.
Essentially taking a backup quarterback with the 4th overall pick is completely wasting the draft capital that has been built up by the Browns over the past couple seasons. Looking at most mock drafts, Bradley Chubb will be available at pick number four. Wasting that pick and passing on a potential pro-bowler is just irresponsible as a GM.
Needless to say, anything is always possible with the Browns organization, but that is never a good thing.
