On Valentine’s Day in Japan, Kenny Omega wrestled a near-perfect match, serenaded 3000-plus people with a Katy Perry song, and became the best pro wrestler in the world. In that order.
Omega beat Hiroshi Tanahashi for the vacant IWGP Intercontinental Championship in a match of the year contender. This was after he became the leader of the most well-known faction in the wrestling business, the Bullet Club. It has become cliché to say, but in this case it is true, Omega has all of the tools.
He has the same in-ring ability of guys like Seth Rollins or A.J. Styles, the charisma of someone like Shinsuke Nakamura in a different way, the promo ability of Chris Jericho, and the ability to go out and give interviews like John Cena. Omega is the total package and has been putting it together quietly for years. He became a superstar on the very night his company needed him to.
The brand Omega has created with the Young Bucks naming themselves “The Elite” is not hyperbole. He is in an elite category and so are his partners. The Young Bucks have become the top tag team in the world as well. Any show that has these three working together will do great business, and their match will be the main event, no matter where it is on the card. This was evidenced by the Ring of Honor 14th Anniversary show, where The Elite’s match went on before the main event and the crowd couldn’t get into anything else after watching them.
Wrestlers need to stand out amongst their peers, and Omega does that with a unique look, personality, and athleticism. His hair is perfectly untamed, providing a vibe of unpredictability when you see him. He is true to his nickname “the cleaner,” bringing a broom with him to ringside. And in the ring, his moveset is unparalleled, especially his finishing move, the “One Winged Angel.”
Omega wants to push the boundaries of professional wrestling, evidenced by his entrance promo at NJPW’s Dominion show. He sent a message to both fans and performers in WWE that he is the best in the world at what they do, and he was right.
